Oct. 31 is a date that never changes, an old tradition marked on calendars around the globe. It’s a time when there are no limitations on where your imagination can take you. From vampires to ghouls, dinosaurs and beyond; Halloween is an exciting time for people young and old.
Rain or shine children will anxiously wait until dark to go “trick-or-treating”.
Knocking on neighbouring doors, “trick-or-treat!”, they’ll shout while neighbours guess what each child is disguised as, loading handfuls of candy into their pumpkin-shaped baskets.
While this is an exciting time of year for many, the COVID-19 pandemic may make many of us weary about the idea of trick-or-treating. But, that does not mean Halloween has to be cancelled all around!
An urban drive-in with a oldies feel
Hyland Cinema, located at 240 Wharncliffe Rd. S. reinvented themselves on July 1 when the Government gave the go ahead for drive-in cinemas to re-open. Looking for an opportunity to create some revenue, the Hyland built a drive-in style screen on the back of their cinema to show films during the summer months.
“It’s a smaller and more intimate environment. We deliver all the food to the cars so it’s a total no contact experience,” explained Co-owner of Hyland Cinema, Moira Adlan.
All tickets and concessions are purchased on the website before arrival and a staff member wearing a mask and gloves delivers everything to the car for you. Abiding by the government guidelines, a staff member will also show you where to park to ensure each car is 6 feet apart from one another (the drive-in allows spots for 30 vehicles).
Special double feature
To make sure people of all ages have something to enjoy, Adlan says that the Hyland will run a special double feature on Halloween,
“There will be a special 6:30 p.m. screening of Casper where the kids can come in costume. They can send a picture to us before hand in their costumes to be featured on the big screen during the pre-show. “
To keep spirits high, Adlan says the cinema will be running a Ghostbusters theme the evening of Halloween. Staff will be in costume, a blow up Ghostbusters car will be on site and even a special appearance by Ghostbusters character, Slimer.
With an earlier feature time for families, Adlan adds that it’s nice to have a drive-in option in town where people don’t have to do a long drive back home in the dark.
