Ontarians will have to make a big choice in the coming weeks.
Customers can expect a $2.24 increase, after new Hydro rates come into effect November 1st, 2020.
Ontario will be using time-of-use (TOU) and tiered electricity pricing, after having a flat rate of 12.8 cents/kWh. The flat rate came out during the pandemic, as more and more people were staying home.
Residents of Ontario will have the choice of TOU pricing, or tiered pricing.
For TOU, the rate will start at 21.7 cents/kWh for peak hours, 15 cents/kWh for mid peak use and 10.5 cents/kWh for off-peak use.
The time-of-use schedule begins November 1st. The most expensive time will be peak time, 7am and 11am and again at 5pm and 7pm on weekdays. Off-peak hours are between 7pm and 7am, everyday (including holidays). Med-peak will be weekdays at 11am and 5pm.
Tiered prices will be 12.6 cents/kWh for the first 1000 kWh used each month and 14.6 cents/kWh for any extra used hydro.
