The City of London announced today that it will be offering 13 modified summer day camps starting on July 13th and July 20th. The camps will be offered for campers aged 4-12 and will run monday to friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last day of camp will be September 4th. Day camp will also be offered at Storybook Gardens. Camps will start on the following days.
Starting July 13th:
- Argyle Arena
- Boyle Community Centre
- Byron Community Centre
- Stronach Recreation Centre
- South London Community Centre
- Kinsmen Recreation Centre
Camps starting July 20th:
- Earl Nichols Arena
- Lambeth Community Centre and Arena
- Kiwanis Seniors Centre
- Medway Community Centre and Arena
- North London Optimist Community Centre
The City will also offer it’s Summer Suprise program for youth ages 12-21 with special needs starting July 20th. The ratio of staff to campers will be 1:3. The camp will run weekly until Friday August 8th.
“City staff has been working exceptionally hard to ensure we are able to adhere to provincial health and safety guidelines.” Said London Mayor Ed Holder. “Camp will certainly look and feel, a little different than it did last year.”
Some key changes that will be made include.
- Camp staff will wear PPE (Campers will not be provided with masks)
- Screening for staff
- Screening for campers upon arrival
- Assigned drop-off and pick-up time based on camp group
- Staff will keep daily records of those who enter the program setting for contact tracing if there is a confirmed COVID-19 case.
- Physical distancing will be enforced within camper groups (Except when first aid or staff intervention are needed.)
- Only staff and campers will be allowed inside camp facilities.
“Because of the pandemic we will have fewer camps with fewer kids and in fewer locations.” Explained the Mayor.
Each location will have a maximum of 32 campers with some accepting fewer. There will be two campers for every group of eight children and counselors will stay with the same group all week. Additional staff will be on hand for planning, coordination, and cleaning.
Each group of campers will participate in activities separate from other groups. With enhanced cleaning and disenfecting taking place when campers move stations.
“Were doing our best to create a fun experience for all involved.” said the Mayor.
Campers will no be participating in field trips, cooking activities or hot lunches. Trips to nearby parks will be available for some locations. Camp Coordinators are looking in to virtual field trips and fitness activities.
Registration for camps will be available starting Monday June 22nd at 8:30 a.m. online or by calling 519-661-5575. In person registration will also be available. There are limited spots due to the pandemic, and registration will be on a first come first server basis.
