Although some food trucks run nearly all year round, summer is food truck season. However a lot has changed over the past few months due to the pandemic shutting down the province.
Dee Spencer is the owner and operator of the Donut Diva food truck. She explained that after shutting down operations for the last few months, Londons food trucks waited for the announcement of phase one of reopening before taking their trucks out.
“We touched base with our health inspectors to see what new guidlines we had to adhere to.” She adds that they also took a look at the governments guidelines on reopening.
In order to premote safe distance Donut Diva along with other London food trucks put out cones to ensure that customers waiting in line are physically distancing.
Keeping a safe distance while inside the truck however is a different story. For Spencer that isn’t a problem because she runs the truck on her own. As for other trucks she says “They generally operate with one possibly two. And they all wear masks and theyre good at keeping there distance.”
Before opening up to the public again Donut Diva started to offer a delivery service. However Spencer says that the concept of delivering isn’t a new one.
“We’ve had multiple requests to do deliveries. But at the time we just weren’t able to.” She says that deliveries have been working out very well so far.
Donut Diva isn’t the only food truck that’s started to offer deliveries. They have partnered with Big Daddy Bacon, Grill’em Food Truck and Rocky Mountain Pizza in order to offer combos. Although Donut Diva is open to the public again they continue to offer deliveries.
Food trucks are often one of the highlights of summer festivals. However most festivals have now been cancelled. “It’s going to definitely be a different kind of a season without festivals.” She adds that not all food trucks rely on festivals for their main business.
She has reached out to community groups to talk about setting up community food truck nights. For now however Donut Diva along with several other trucks can be found at the corner of Wonderland and Riverside most weekends. For more information and updates you can visit their Facebook page.
