As we continue to see the repercussions of COVID-19 increasing worldwide, sports, social events, jobs, businesses and many more have come to a halt.
Caroline Cameron is a Fanshawe graduate and Television Sportscaster for Sportsnet Central in Toronto.
Due to the pause of the sports world she has been working from home with limited new material, since COVID-19 sent Canada into a 14-day lock down.
She says in this unprecedented situation the world is in right now, we must look at the silver lining.Being in this position is giving people the opportunity to be creative in their delivery of information.
“There’s still a need for context, it’s just you have to think outside the box as to how you want to deliver it.”
March 12th marks the day the sports world stood still, after the NBA announced their decision to suspend the season due to COVID-19. After this release it was only fitting that more postponements and cancellations were to come.
Cameron said walking into work Thursday morning was bizarre knowing her hockey central show was going to be anything but regular.
With all hands-on deck with herself included, Elliot Friedman, Brian Burke, Chris Johnston and Anthony Stewart all took their place on the big set with the same question in mind but no answer.
That morning the NHL announced they would be pausing the 2019-2020 NHL season.
“leaving the studio that night was kind of sad because it was like the forced last day of school. We didn’t know when we were all going to see each other again, and that still stand to be the case today.”

When we see big sporting events like the Olympics being postponed, it gets people questioning how it would even be feasible for the 2019-2020 sports season to continue.
Would it pick back up in the summer? Or are we going to have to wait until the fall and just start fresh?
When Gary Bettman announced the pause of the NHL season, he used the word ‘creative’ to describe how the playoffs would play out and how the season will end.
Cameron says the issue is that the higher ups still don’t know what is going to happen so everything is unknown at this point.
“In this industry we have our insiders and contacts, but this situation is so much bigger than sports, everyone is just following what the World Health Organization is saying.”
Athletes and sports representatives are trying to make the best of these hard times by heading to social media. Including Caroline who has taken it upon herself to try and bring a smile to her followers faces.

People across the world look to sports and other social events as an outlet, whether it’s entertainment or recreation.
Through this time of the unknown it’s important to come together and support one another mentally and physically so we can get through this challenging time to the best of our ability.
