The London Knights (45-15-1-1) hosted the Oshawa Generals (31-20-6-5) Sunday night at Budweiser Gardens. This was London’s 3rd game in 3 days as they had a very busy weekend. London was able to get the 3-1 win. Connor McMichael had the game winning goal for the Knights against his former teammate and former London Knight Goalie Jordan Kooy. This has given London seven straight wins. Rookie goaltender Brett Brochu was in net for London in the victory. This was Brett’s 32nd win of the season which broke the record for most ever wins in an OHL season by a rookie goaltender.
London played 3 games over the weekend and were able to get a win in each game. At this point of the season with only 6 games left each 2 points that are up for grabs is huge. The Knights are in 1st place in the OHL’s western conference and are hoping to stay there so they can have home ice advantage in the playoffs.
Connor McMichael has became the Knights sniper over the season and was trying his best to get a goal past his former teammate Jordan Kooy throughout a good part of the game. McMichael was able to surpass 100 points for the season over the weekend. Kooy was able to stop all of McMichael’s first 6 shots but with only a few minutes left in the 3rd period Connor was able to sneak one past him. This gave the Knights a late lead in the 3rd period and ultimately led them to the 3-1 victory over the Oshawa Generals.
XFM news reporter Christian Mahu caught up with Connor to ask what he saw on the game winning goal. He said, “I kind of stuck it to him and waited for him to make the first move, then shot it low pad.”
This was McMichael’s 47th goal on the season and 8th game winner for the young star with a deadly shot.
London has won seven straight games with a few of them being closely contested hard fought games. The team is riding an impressive streak with the season starting to wind down toward playoffs. Every game left is a big one as each 2 points matters.
London Knights rookie goaltender broke the record for most wins in a season by a rookie goalie. Brett Brochu grabbed his 32nd win of the season against the Oshawa Generals on Sunday night. Brett stayed home to rest while the team was on a quick road trip to Owen Sound on Saturday. It was a good choice for the team as Brett had a solid performance stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced and was able to get another win for the Knights.
XFM reporter Christian Mahu caught up with Brett after the game to ask how it was for him playing against former Knights goalie Jordan Kooy. “It was more fun than anything, we knew it would be a good battle, he played well but I’m glad we came up with the win” Brochu said.
XFM news then asked Brett about Connor’s game winning goal. “(McMichael) said after the 2nd period he was going to get one and he did. Big players come up with plays like that at big times.” said Brochu.
The London Knights have the week off to rest up after the 3 game weekend plus losing an hour do to daylight savings. They will return back to action Friday night in London to host the Flint Firebirds in the 1st game of another 3 an 3 for the team.
