Long gone are the days where most common illnesses are treated with whatever your grandma keeps in her purse. In today’s day and age, most health-related issues seem to be solved with a quick trip to the drug store, but that’s not to say home remedies didn’t work. Some were found to be quite useful, but they just don’t fit the convenience factor most people are looking for.
While they may not be the most popular cures, believe it or not home remedies are still relevant. Used in some cases as a last resort, home remedies alternative approach still gives some people hope that they will do the trick. Here are some of the more common remedies seen.
Mustard pack
Found both effective and unbearable, the mustard pack was used to fight off congestion or the common cold. The mustard helps to increase blood circulation, and open up your airways similar to your average cold medicine
Using four different ingredients (Mustard seed powder, Flour, warm cloth, and a washcloth) the pack is applied to the chest for 20 minutes every 4 to 6 hours. It’s noted that despite its effectiveness, a mustard pack poses the risk of blisters or a bad reaction if left on for too long.
Tea tree oil
Not all remedies involve a bizarre combination. The use of tea tree oil is widely seen as one of the most effective when it comes to fighting acne. While it’s not normally used as a face cleanser, the oil fights pre-existing acne in hopes of a short appearance.
It’s recommended that one uses a facial cleanser before applying tea tree oil. Use a couple of drops of oil on a cotton swab before dabbing spots of acne on the face. Alternatively, the oil can be mixed with a facial moistener and applied across the entire face.
Coin rubbing
While home remedies are not as popular in North America, they still have relevance in other parts of the world. Known by many names including gua sha, coin rubbing is a traditional Chinese remedy still used to this day.
The remedy involves creating parallel lines down your body, using a coin and oil. Known to help with the common cold and clear your pores, coin rubbing penetrates your skin while using the oil to cleanse you. While gua sha has been useful for some, the remedy leaves your body with visual bruising for a short period of time.
