Last night was the 30th anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique Massacre. To this day this is still known as the biggest mass shooting Canada has ever seen. 14 women were killed that day in the mass shooting. Every year on December 6th there are many ceremonies all over to remember and honour the women lost that day.
There were multiple ceremonies, one of them was at Victoria Park in London. It was a candlelight service which was very nice. Many people showed up to honour the 14 in the Montreal shooting but also honour the other women in Ontario that have been killed in acts of violence in the past year. All of the lady’s names were laid out loud for everyone to take a few seconds and recognize them.
Being at this event I was able to talk with a few people and get some of their thoughts on this and what has changed and some things that may still need to be changing in the future.
A person at the service said, “I think it has gotten better and continues to do so but more people need to come out to these events and be supportive of woman organizations.”
There is always going to be room to grow and continue to get better with everyone but that’s all we can do. Things are a lot better now and a lot more people are involved. Over time it will continue to grow and become a bigger movement but for now people are making the right steps.
