Thanksgiving is upon us. Many of us enjoy spending it with our loved ones in front of a plate of good food. For other’s, it can be stressful, especially if they have difficulties getting food on the table.
On Friday, The London Food Bank announced their 31st annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Last year the food bank received close to 70,000 pounds of food.
Jane Roy, a co-executive director at the London Food Bank says they aren’t setting any goals.
“If it’s a little bit less (than last years) that’s okay. If it’s more that’s great.”
Every year the food bank helps around 3,300 families across the forest city.
The food banks other Co-executive director Glen Pearson says he’s seen a significant increase in the number of seniors coming in.
“In the last couple of years it’s been about the seniors… They helped make our country so it’s important we help them out”
Pearson adds that he understands it’s difficult for people to look to the food bank for help, but says Londoners have been very generous donors and want to help out.
“Last year 50% of the food we got and gave out was fresh, and we were stunned, so were they!”
The food bank will be teaming up with Meals on Wheels and Anova to reach out to more people who are in need.
To help with the food drive, you can purchase non-perishable items and add them to the donation bins found in local grocery stores.
You can also bring donations to any London fire station, or the food bank’s warehouse on 926 Leathorne St. Perishables are also accepted but need to be dropped of directly to the food bank. You can also donate funds online at londonfoodbank.ca
The Thanksgiving Food Drive runs from October 4-14.
