Snow is a big problem for homeless people who face extreme cold and have few shelter options during winter. However, daily travellers like students also struggle with the snow. For students in London, Ontario, getting to school has become harder due to snowy weather and ongoing construction, which has caused bus detours and delays.
“Because of all the construction in downtown and suburban areas, buses often take detours,” said Navjot Singh, a Fanshawe student. “I have to wake up one or two hours earlier because I know the buses will be late. This affects my health, too, as I have to get up early, and after my evening class, it takes me two hours to get home.”
The snow makes matters worse. Sometimes, when buses are delayed, Singh has to use Uber, which can be expensive in winter.
Many students who rely on buses to get to school or work find the constant delays very frustrating. One student said, “It’s not just about being late to class. I work part-time after school, and if I miss my bus because of a detour or snow, it ruins my whole day.”
Snow slows down buses and makes walking to bus stops or waiting outside unsafe. Many students leave home earlier than usual to avoid delays, but that isn’t always enough. Some even spend extra money on taxis or rideshares when buses don’t show up on time.
Homeless people struggle in the snow, while students and commuters face slippery roads and delays. Many hope for better transit and snow removal, but winter is tough for all.
