Just after the United States Election, where Donald Trump won the popular vote, republicans went to celebrate the election results.
Among the celebratory social media posts, a video from the far-right live streamer, Nick Fuentes, went viral.
“The feel when we control your bodies. Hey b*tch, we control your bodies. Guess what. Guys win again. OK, men win again, and yes, we control your bodies,” Fuentes said in his video. “It’s your body. My choice.”
Posts and comments came out replying to the video.
“Time to get a carry and concealed license cause if my body is your choice, your body’s my choice too,” a TikTok video from Emily Rosa (emilyyrosaa) said. “And if I’m already going to be charged as a murderer for abortion, might as well give him an actual f*cking body.”
Most of the video replies and comments were fighting back against the message of Fuentes’s video.
“I think that that is unfortunately quite common, and this is not a new phenomenon. You know, the shock jock thing goes back decades of, I’m going to say something super outrageous to make people angry, and then I’m going to laugh that they’re angry that they have feelings about this outrageous thing that I’m saying.” Anova Public Education Manager, Allison Preyde said. “I remember on election night there was a hashtag going around of Emotional support Canadian, where if someone needed to just like debrief, people would be like, yeah, you can DM me, I can be your emotional support Canadian because it doesn’t directly impact me, but also it does impact us, right.”
Roe v. Wade was overturned in the United States on June 24, 2022. Since then, we have seen many conversations discussing this regression and what it means to women, but a main concern for Canadians is whether we will see these same regressions in Canada’s future.
“I have been around for a few election cycles, and we have lived through several of these so far, and the pendulum always swings back,” Preyde added. “There is absolutely reason to be very scared for the next 4 years and for what is going on and the sort of global rise of fascism. There is always a counter swing, so that is not to say, rest easy, just ride it out. No, we have to fight for it. We have to write letters to our MPs and MPP we have to stay involved politically, but also these things do swing around.”
