The city of London passes a community by-law for the safety inspection of vehicles for hire; thirty percent of Ubers and Lfyts checked have failed their inspections.
One hundred private vehicles for hire (Uber and Lyft) licensed to carry passengers were randomly picked to gather for an inspection at Silverwood Arena Park from Tuesday to Friday.
“The inspection has been going on for a few days; on the first day, we had 33 vehicles inspected, 10 out of 33 failed, and were taken off the road,” says Chief Municipal Law Enforcement Officer Orest Katolyk.
Katolyk says this is not a new initiative, as taxis and Limousines go through a renewal process; they all come here to get inspected. This is the first time we have proactively inspected private vehicles for hire.
He also says vehicles that failed their inspections since Tuesday have been removed.
“The reasons these vehicles are removed off the road is for the safety of the cars, like old vehicles that do not comply with using Uber and Lyfts, overly tinted cars,” he explains.
We currently have 7,500 drivers licensed to use Uber or Lyft in the City of London. We want to ensure maximum protection and security for everyone who lives in the city and uses any of these as their mode of transportation.
The remaining drivers have until Friday to come in for their inspection, or the city will work with Uber and Lyft to remove them from these apps.
” Whenever there is a violation of the community by-law, we consult with the platform (Uber and Lyft) and work closely with them to make sure those vehicles and drivers are taken off.” Says Katolyk.
