London is targeting stormwater management after major rainfalls this month.
“Several stormwater management infrastructure projects are planned to begin construction soon this summer helping improve London’s resiliency to severe weather, flooding, and the impacts of climate change,” says a media release from the City of London.
This comes after Toronto saw flooding earlier this month that closed major roadways, flooded residents’ basements, and resulted in power losses.
“Significant rain events like what London experienced this month demonstrate how important it is that our city continues to invest in stormwater infrastructure,” says Mayor Josh Morgan in the press release. “Making ongoing improvements will help us stay ready for severe weather and will help London continue to adapt to climate change.”
Construction preparations have begun at Harris Park. The city plans to start construction at other sites in the coming weeks including, Matthews Hall Stormwater in Hyde Park, Springbank Dam, Mud Creek near Riverside Drive and Wonderland Road, and flood prevention at Greenway and Adelaide Wastewater Treatment Plants.
“Strong and reliable stormwater infrastructure supports our rapidly growing city,” says Director, Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater, Ashley Rammeloo in the media release. “Planning and constructing for the future helps our city accommodate more homes and development, while increasing our capacity for storms and flooding events.”
London is expected to see rain all this week, with the risk of thunderstorms.
