West Region Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have seen an increase in seat belt infractions this year.
“West Region had over 165 seat belt infraction charges laid, and that is a substantial increase over the same time period last year,” says West Region OPP Media Coordinator, Derek Rogers.
Last year the West Region OPP laid 94 seat belt infraction charges over the same time period as this year. A seat belt infraction ticket can cost up to $1000 and two demerit points.
Half a million Ontarians do not buckle up on a regular basis and people in collisions are 36-times more likely to be killed if they were not wearing a seatbelt, according to ontario.ca.
“We want people to remember that seat belts will save your life in a crash, and we want people to make sure they’re wearing them and that the other people in their vehicle are wearing them as well,” says Rogers.
