As the summer season approaches, London’s patios continue to offer an alternative for locals and tourists who want to socialize with their family, couples, or friends. Despite the unpredictable weather of the last weeks, these places remain hubs of social activity people choose when they want to enjoy their favorite foods or drinks outdoors. The weather is expected to improve.
“Any patio is weather-dependent, so the better the weather is, the busier we get. The ideal weather for a business would be hot and humid,“ says Steve Granger, manager of Barney’s, the city’s largest patio, which has 60 tables available for about 30 years. Next to this is its associated and iconic bar, officially called The Canadian House, and now ‘Ceeps’, which opened in 1890.
Winks Eatery Inc., an established spot in London since March 2006, has also benefited greatly from its expansive patio that accommodates up to 82 guests. “We always look forward to patio season, it is really busy and good for the business,” says Alyssa Doub, its General Manager.
“We have a very busy patio season normally. We have music and daily specials, too; just depends on the weather. I find it started a little rainier than normal but this past week was almost like July weather so we’re hoping that sticks around and people come out for the hot sun and a drink,” adds Doub. In June, Winks is starting live music on Saturdays outside and then every Friday night it has live music inside. It has rock and roll bingo, trivia nights, and karaoke, throughout the weeks.
Marvin Rivas, owner of Che Restobar, celebrates nearly 13 years of operation. They opened the patios during the pandemic three years ago: first, the front patio, and then their courtyard patio at the back of the restaurant which offers live music and unique Latin American cuisine. “The patios contribute greatly to the environment of the city. Families and friends can enjoy having drinks and food, so it makes downtown more inviting to people who are coming to London to visit. We go until the end of October depending on the weather conditions,” says Rivas.
When patio season comes, people want to get out, enjoy the sunshine, and get fresh air. The dynamic of having indoor and outdoor spaces ensures that clients have a place to enjoy regardless of the season or rain, although some people prefer spring or summer to enjoy the open sky. “I love coming to the patios during this season. I like the ones downtown because some are surrounded by nature,“ says Antonio Villacob, a diner.
The patios of London are more than just a seasonal attraction. They are vital for the economy, tourism, and vibrancy of the area, offering residents and visitors alike a chance to enjoy the city’s culinary delights in an engaging outdoor setting.
