The London Police Service held a press conference on Monday, giving an update about the sexual assault case that took place in London, in 2018.
During the question period, Police Chief Thai Truong approached the microphone to state that the violence towards women happens worldwide.
‘’The sexualization of young women and girls in today’s society is contributing to the violence against women. I am not blaming the media, but I do want to highlight that how we portray young women and girls on TV, in music videos, how we write about them, magazines and all that, it all contributes to sexual violence and the normalization of what we are seeing.’’
Executive Director of London Abused Women’s Centre Jennifer Dunn shared her thoughts on the chief’s statement.
‘’I think he could have touched on the accountability of those that cause the violence. Because at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how a woman dresses or what she does. The blame should lie on the perpetrator of the abuse.’’
She says it’s great he recognized that violence against women is a worldwide issue. Police said they are working hard to regain trust within the community, and that includes LAWC.
‘’There have been some challenges that women face when coming forward and trust is a really big piece. I know the LPS is working really hard to regain trust, and you could see that in the way that the police chief issued the apology. But there’s still a lot of work to do and a lot of trust that has to be earned.’’
