People from all over the world have come together over the weekend to get to know London and to meet new people.
Bukola Abdulsalam can’t speak from experience but she has witnessed newcomers face different challenges.
“First of all, the weather is a huge culture shock.” Abdulsalam
Weather can be an issue for those who come from warm climates and they would have to adjust to our cold Canadian weather.
They would have to make sure to get the proper clothes for the appropriate weather.
“They don’t have access to information on where they can go to meet people, even food. Sometimes people are not sure where to go to shop for food.”
Finding the right information can be difficult for a newcomer on where to meet people as well as where to go grocery shopping for their cultural food.
Abdulsalam also mentions that housing in London is a huge challenge for many international students and newcomers.
“Housing is also a challenge and not just finding a house but finding a house that is in the right income bracket for someone who is probably just a student and isn’t making much money.”
Finding housing is a difficult task for anyone, especially an international student. It can be hard on them as well as feeling homesick.
Leanne-Ashley Torlaocotales was young when she came to London and her challenges were about family.
“The challenges that I experience are obviously being away from my family in the Philippines that’s like something that you know as a young kid is very hard.”
People immigrating to London can be challenging, for individuals, families and children. It can also become an easier transition once they get all the necessary information as well as meeting new people.
