London City councillors and MPPs Stood outside city hall with protestors highlighting key concerns about Ontario’s New Housing Bill. Ward 1 councillor Hadleigh McAlister is one of many that spoke out at the protest. “I think what it’s shown is that the province doesn’t care about municipalities. They don’t care about the people they’re putting profits before people and that is an absolute outrage, and it should be called out for what it is.” McAlister said.
Other councillors spoke out at the protest that are trying to stop Bill 23 and are wanting to protect affordable housing in London. The concern from bill 23 is that it will strip away cities power to build and protect affordable housing. “When I first moved to London in like 2013. I was paying five hundred dollars for a one-bedroom apartment downtown. Then I had to move two years later thirteen hundred dollars. Now, I pay eighteen hundred dollars” said by one the protestors Kelvin Jones at the rally.
“Fight, fight , fight, housing is a right” is a phrase the crowd started to use to chant. This brought attention to the crowd in front of city hall. People walking by came over to see what the protest was about and a few joined in to fight for the cause. Cars that were driving by honked their horns to show their support as well.
According to Ontario Nature, this Bill will cause a domino effect of negative environmental issues and deepen the homelessness crisis here in London . “I have to cut meals; I go to ask my friends for food, but they are struggling the same way” Jones says. The proposed bill will also have consequences for environmental protection laws here in Ontario.
