Over the weekend, the Houston Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to win the World Series. It was a hard fought six game series. Even in defeat, the Phillies still managed to make Canadian baseball history. Phillies skipper Rob Thomson is the first Canadian born manager to make the World Series. Thomson is a native of Sarnia, Ontario and played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues with the San Francisco Giants. During his playing career, Thomson was selected to two all-star games, won a gold glove and a silver slugger. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.
Congratulations Hall of Famer Rob Thomson on the great season. Can’t wait to watch you manage the next two years. Thank you. #RingTheBell 🇨🇦🇨🇦💪💪⚾️⚾️ pic.twitter.com/SiGMI3bv3J

Thomson took over as interim Manager mid-way through the season, replacing then manager Joe Girardi. The Phillies were 22-29 at the time of Thomson’s promotion. Under Thomson, the Phillies had a 65-46 record, and made it as far as the World Series. Thomson was awarded the full time Managerial job back in October, as well as a two year contract extension.
