The London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC) is now underway with their 13th annual Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign. On November first around 6 p.m. at Victoria Park the LAWC lit up the Tree of Hope all in purple to help raise awareness for men’s violence against women. The kick-off event began at 5:30 p.m. with a large crowd gathering to listen to LAWC executive director Jennifer Dunn followed by other speakers.
Marsha Ackland-Parker is a survivor of domestic violence that came out to the kick-off event along with other survivors. Marsha is looking to go back to school next year to become an advocate member herself. “I’ve now joined LAWC’S Survivor consultant committee, I’m on safe cities London advisory committee and I meet with other women who have been through what I’ve been through to support them in every way that I can”, Marsha said. Within the crowd, other city councilors came out to show their support followed by London’s new mayor Josh Morgan.
Shine the Light on Woman Abuse here in London corelates with Woman Abuse Prevention and awareness for November. A booth was set up at the kick-off event where people could purchase a purple shirt, pins, flags, and posters. Staff members from the LAWC set the booth up to help promote on wearing purple on November 15th for the Shine the Light on Women Abuse campaign.
