The London Food bank donated one million dollars to the builders of the ‘Vision Soho Alliance’. The money will be used for the city’s largest affordable housing project and is supposed to improve the lives of their future renters.
When people have money, they don’t have to rely upon the foodbank.
Doug Plumley, Finance and technology coordinator at the London Food bank
Earlier, the food bank also stated that the demand for their help is severely increasing and that things definitely need to change. “When the pandemic first hit, we were serving about 3200 families a month,” says Doug Plumley, Finance and technology coordinator at the London Food bank. “The emergency response benefit that was provided by the federal government, made a huge difference in dropping the need for our services. But as that support came to an end and inflation came to a rise, our numbers increased significantly to approximately 4000 families a month.”
Plumley also said the partnership with the ‘Vision Soho Alliance’ could provide some minor changes. “There is certainly the possibility that this project will reduce our number of families who rely on the Food bank, but then it is very important that the homes are comfortable to live in as well,” Plumley said.
He also stated that if people save money by renting one of the affordable homes, they can use that money to support themselves and therefore do not have to rely on the Food bank. Plumley did emphasize that this will only solve a small part of the major problem, as this initiative will not help all families who rely upon the Food bank.
