Abigail King, a former student of Auto Body Repair Techniques program at Fanshawe, was competing last week at the World Skills Competition in Bern, Switzerland.
Earlier this year she won a gold medal at the 2022 Skills Canada National Competition. It was held in Vancouver at the end of May.
However, this time in Europe, her winning streak came to an end.
“Even though I did not end up with a medal, I am still proud of making it this far,” King said.
She says the tension was unimaginable, especially since the competition hadn’t been held in three years because of Covid.
“I was definitely anxious, but once it was complete I was relieved and super proud of myself,” Kind said.
World Skills is a competition for young students from colleges and universities across the World. It is a chance to show the skills in different disciplines.
She started preparation for competition 11 months prior.
“Abby displayed natural talent for welding and sheet metal repair. She became a perfect candidate for the auto body repair competition,” James Shaw, the Auto Body Repair program coordinator, said.
Abby was competing in the Auto Body Repair category, despite having relatively small experience in the field.
“I did some things I’ve never done before, and competed against guys who’ve been in trade for longer than me,” King said.
Shaw said that she took on any extra training throughout the two semesters of regular schooling.
