Disney Investors Day is a yearly presentation that lays the groundwork for content to come and recaps the past year of successes for the company. This year the focus was on the 100th Anniversary of Disney. Chief Executive Officer Bob Chapek was the one to present the whole event. Chapek promised many plans to come to celebrate the century of Disney and said more details would be given at a later date.
The presentation then continued with an overview of the company’s shifted focus on operating. Chapek shared that the main principle behind everything Disney does is storytelling excellence and audience focus. This will be the focus with all changes and releases coming to Disney products and services. Chapek continued praising Disney for its ability to deliver entertainment options ahead of the curve. The total number of streaming service subscribers was revealed to be 196 million subscribers. This is on all of Disney’s streaming service offerings.
The presentation then became a celebration of all the storytelling excellence that Disney has had over the past year. A massive chunk of this portion celebrated the hit movie ‘Encanto.’ Disney flaunted that the film is now a cultural phenomenon and an Oscar nominee. In addition, they celebrated the success of the film’s soundtrack, showcasing ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’, which has become a Billboard-charting hit. Lin Manuel Miranda also appeared to thank everyone for their support of ‘Encanto’ and gushed about how much he appreciates the love fans have given him.
Chapek then began previewing upcoming movies & series coming from Disney. Movies like Turning Red, Doctor Strange 2, Thor Love & Thunder, Pinocchio, & Avatar 2 were shortly discussed. The soon-to-be-released shows Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, & She-Hulk were also discussed. Disney then revealed some new upcoming shows coming to Disney +. The first is a Cars spinoff called ‘Cars On The Road,’ which features all your favorite Cars characters. ‘Baymax!’, a spinoff of Big Hero 6, was also revealed. Then came the Star Wars news that everyone had been anticipating. The first reveal was for Andor, a spinoff series from the movie Star Wars: Rogue One. Then came the biggest reveal of the event, the official trailer for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series coming May 25th.
The trailer featured many rumored plot points, including Inquisitors, the growing Empire, a returning Darth Vader, and many callbacks to the original Star Wars movies. The trailer gives just enough to get you excited but not too much.
After the big reveal, some other new shows were announced. American Born Chinese was also revealed, starring multiple actors from the Shang-Chi cast. A new spinoff series of the National Treasure film series was announced to star Catherine Zeta-Jones. A show titled The Old Man was also announced starring Jeff Bridges.
Chapek then switched over to talk about Disney’s Sports coverage. First, their coverage on services like ESPN was celebrated in a montage of the year’s most significant sporting events. It was then revealed that Disney would be creating new Sports content with Peyton Manning. This was reported as part of a brand new multi-year contract with the company. A multi-part Derek Jeter docuseries was also teased during this portion of the event.
Chapek then concluded with the final portion of the event, talking about Disney’s landmark offerings. Chapek shared that offerings like the new Star Wars park, the Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster, and Marvel-themed hotels were ready to open. There were also teases of future projects like a refurbished ‘Mickey’s Toon Town,’ Zootopia themed land, and Frozen themed land. The company’s parks’ final detail was that the Avengers’ Campus was nearly ready to open. Shortly after, a teaser was also shared about plans for Disney residential areas called ‘Story Living.’ These areas would be livable residences based on Disney’s many iconic franchises.
Chapek ended the show thanking everyone for supporting Disney through the pandemic and that they are excited for what the future holds for the company in the coming years.
