The London International Airport has opened a park for eager aviation lovers to go observe planes safely. It’s called “YXU Air Park” and Gerry Vanderhoek, manager of passenger experience and commercial services at the airport, had the idea after receiving many questions.
“It was probably the biggest question asked when people came to the terminal,” says Vanderhoek. “‘Where can we watch the planes?’ So we would find people in all sorts of discombobulated places in the airport trying to see the planes or get to a spot that might not even be on airport property that someone else may not even want them on.”
The park, located just off of Dundas on Creamery Road, features different signage about the aircraft that frequent the London airport and some history. CEO and President of the airport, Scott McFadzean, says having a space for people to safely watch was one motivator, but there was another.
“We’re really trying to involve the community and make them aware of what’s going on here at the airport,” says McFadzean. “And really motivating and encouraging the younger generations to get excited about aviation and hopefully pursue careers or something in the form of aviation in the future.”
As for rules at the park, McFadzean and Vanderhoek say staying within the park limits and not climbing fences or getting onto the airport side is very important. As well as keeping it clean and putting garbage in the garbage bins.
