Sony & Disney’s new blockbuster movie Spider-Man: No Way Home is coming, and the hype is as high as it can be. Rumors have been circulating from the very start of the movie’s production about who could potentially appear in the film. This all started after Alfred Molina was confirmed to reprise his role as the Doc Ock from the early 2000s Spider-Man movie trilogy. Once this was confirmed, fans began to wonder who else could be included in the movie and what could be possible.
The immediate conclusion was that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would reprise their roles as Spider-Man teaming with Tom Holland’s Spidey in a trio. There was no evidence to prove this, but the fans were convinced that if villains from different universes were arriving, so would the heroes. The speculation built up as more old villains were confirmed to return. Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Thomas Church’s Sandman, and Rhys Ifans’ Lizard were all confirmed to appear.
Last Sunday, rumors started talking about an event in Los Angeles that ended up being the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer release event that took place tonight. Tom Holland was in attendance for the event, and the trailer was released. You can watch it below:

The Analysis of the Trailer
Okay, so there was no Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield but let’s break it down because there are A LOT of hints and mentions of them.
- First, there is the prominent mention of ‘visitors’ from a different universe. Of course, Doctor Strange could be just talking about the villains arriving from other universes here, but there is more.
- The next big hint comes when Doc Ock realizes that the Spider-Man he is attacking is not the Peter Parker he knows from his universe.
- The next mention comes when Strange is talking to who we assume is Peter, telling him, “There are others out there, we need to send them back!”. Once again, this could be a reference to the villains, but this is when it starts to become blatant.
- When Doctor Strange tells Peter and his friends to “Scooby-Doo this…” an interesting potential hint lies. The original team in Scooby-Doo had five members. There was Daphne, Fred, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby. However, we see three people in this specific scene, so who could be the other two people? Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield!
- There’s next mention of Strange knowing that all the villains die to Spider-Man, so he knows of the other Spideys.
- Then comes what looks like an epic battle around the Statue of Liberty that drops a giant easter egg. We see a scene where Zendaya’s M.J. falls in a perfect recreation of when Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy falls to her death in Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man series.
Then, we get what I think is the biggest hint that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their roles as Spider-Man in this film:

You saw that right! The Lizard looks like his head gets hit by someone or something that isn’t there. This specific extended version of the scene was only in the Brazilian version of the trailer. My theory is that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have been digitally removed from this scene to keep the speculation going. In this scene, you see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man leaping at Sandman, but The Lizard and Electro look to be going towards nothing. There has to be something more to this scene that is missing. This kind of digital hiding of details is nothing new to Marvel. In the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, Thanos had two infinity stones during the battle of Wakanda, while in the movie, he had 5. Bruce Banner inside the Hulkbuster Armor also did not appear in the Infinity War trailer.
So, will Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield be in the new Spider-Man film? Maybe, or maybe I am just looking too much into this. But with all the evidence laid out, it seems like we will see them in the film. Either way, Spider-Man: No Way Home comes out on December 17th. Cyber Monday on November 29th has also been announced as the day that tickets go on sale.
