An investigation has begun looking into multiple allegations of sexual assault at Western University over the weekend.
With the school year just beginning, many students are now hesitant for their safety on campus amid discussions of up to 30 female students allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted on campus.
In a press release, London police have acknowledged information circulating online through social media regarding the numerous alleged sexual assaults at Medway-Sydenham Hall. However, Officials state there have been no reported incidents from this weekend involving Medway-Sydenham Hall.
“Given the seriousness of the allegations raised in relation to incidents occurring at Medway-Sydenham Hall, the London Police Service has opened an investigation and we will work collaboratively with Western University to identify and support any victims and ensure a thorough investigation is conducted.” shared Officials in the release.
As two reports received in the week prior to the latest sexual assault allegations coming from other locations on campus, the ongoing investigation will include an insight into linking any unreported incidents.
Em Young is a student in her final year at Western, where she is mindful in taking precautions to feel safe while on campus.
“I feel safe during the day for sure, you can kind of gauge what happens. But, when it’s the night time.. definitely afraid. Even before the pandemic, I was afraid to walk home because I don’t know what’s happening,” she shares. “I think Western is definitely in a rock and a hard place, because how are you going to monitor or control what is happening on campus? How are you going to control people off campus? This past weekend was crazy because everyone is back to school, everyone is back here, they want to have a good time. For me, when it was my first year, I covered my drink. I don’t let any guys buy me a drink, I don’t trust that.”
In continuation with the LPS press release, Officials encourage anyone who has experienced sexual violence to report it to the police to aid in information regarding the investigation and fully support those who feel comfortable coming forward.
Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to contact the police at 519-661-5670, or online anonymous through London Elgin Middlesex Crime Stoppers.
