After four members of a Muslim family were killed on Sunday night, the accused appeared in court by video today. The police are saying it was a deliberate hate crime.
The Afzaal family was out for a walk when a vehicle drove into them, killing 4, and sending a 9-year-old boy to the hospital in serious condition. The 9-year-old boy is the lone survivor.
20-year old Nathaniel Veltman appeared on video wearing an orange jumpsuit and disposable face mask. For the duration of the 5-minute hearing, he showed no emotion. When he was asked his name, he stated, “Nate Veltman”.
Veltman is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. No new charges were laid today.
Veltman mentioned he needs to apply for legal aid in the hearing. He has been in talks with Damon Hardy of the Hardy Criminal Law Firm in London.
A publication ban was put in place on the evidence in this case. The next hearing is set for June 14.
