“We’ve made the best out of a bad situation” Grace Vo-Edwards, a member of the prom committee says.
After receiving word about a virtual graduation ceremony, students at Sir Fredrick Banting Secondary School are still hoping to have an in-person prom celebration this year.
The graduating students should still be able to walk across the stage to receive their diploma at the end of the year. Depending on the state of the pandemic, the school is planning on pre-recording the ceremony and celebrating via livestream.
“If we’re not going to school for the rest of the year, we can’t walk across the stage. But we can still purchase the gown and go on our own time to take photos, which I’m most excited for” Ionna Hopper, grade 12 student and head of the prom committee says.
Most high schools – like Sir Fredrick Banting – aren’t usually affiliated with prom. Which means the team of graduates have been working tirelessly on their own since September to make prom possible. Which they say will make the event that much more special when it happens.
“Our hope is that it will happen. And that it can be one last chance where everyone can come together and say a proper goodbye before we all go our separate ways” Hopper says.
The current plan is to have the prom on June 29th at a local golf course. With lots of room on the Green, the team is hoping that London will be out of lockdown by then. Allowing for 100 people to gather outside.
“No one really wants to take pictures with their masks on. So it will be nice to have a big open area where we can do all that stuff” Laurier Chappell, a member of the committee says.
After discussing with family members in the health field, the team has decided to keep the date as is, even after the extension of the current Stay At Home Order. With raising around $2000 through fundraisers and selling out tickets, it would be difficult to just cancel the event.
The committee is expressive of their gratitude for each other and being able to bond over a common end goal. Which otherwise would have been difficult due to the group being separated in different grade cohorts.
“Everyone has been really supportive of each other and tried to help one another. And I think that’s kind of what we had to do all of this year. Because we’ve basically all been learning by ourselves too. Just having someone to support us in some way has helped get us through this” Ella Mills, a member of the committee says.
More information on how to support the graduating students can be found on their prom Instagram page, the committee also has a GoFundMe which has already raised over $200.
