Beal Art school in downtown London has been hard at work over the course of the last three months.
The teachers, alongside students as well as local artist James Kirkpatrick have teamed up to put their skills to the test and paint a community mural. Kirkpatrick is a well known artist in the community, with other examples of his work including his mural for Dundas Place in 2019. Kirkpatrick’s work has also found a home in various art galleries, including McIntosh Gallery at the University of Western Ontario.
Elizabeth Buragina is one of the students who is working on the project. She says that the piece is being made to represent the community.
“The project focuses on intergenerational trauma and the community that surrounds Beal. We’re hoping to highlight the resilience of the community while also learning more about interventions and how we can help them.”
According to Buragina, the mural is quite a large group effort.
“Currently there is the foundations and the specials class alongside the teachers working to create this mural. So I’d say about 40 people total are working on the project.”
For those wondering where the mural will be displayed, Buragina says you won’t have to look far.
“The mural is going to be displayed on the side of Beal that is currently brick wall, it will be facing William Street.”
The project has been underway since last year, but has faced numerous setbacks due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
