Fanshawe College announced on Monday that they have their first confirmed COVID case in residence. It is still unclear on how the student contracted it but the student and close contacts are in self-isolation both on and off campus and are doing well. The Middlesex Health Unit is investigating the case and checking with the students daily to make sure they are doing well.
Fanshawe has done a good job of keeping COVID off campus with daily screening for everyone on campus, but the approach they took to residence this year has helped minimize risk. Brenda Henry from the College spoke with XFM News on this.
“The residences are only at 50% capacity, and what that means, is that if a student has symptoms whether they’re COVID or not they’re able to self-isolate in place. They have their own washroom and bedroom facilities which would have normally been shared by other students in residence.”
Fanshawe College is working with the Middlesex Health Unit to make sure the students are getting everything they need and making sure they are still doing well.
“The residence life coordinators in the buildings are in contact with the students to make sure that they have the mental health support that they need, and they have access to food. The Middlesex Health Unit reaches out to students every day to check in and make sure they are doing fine.
The timing of this is not great as this is the last week of classes at Fanshawe before students go home for Christmas break, meaning some students may have to stay in London for a few extra days.
“Public Health is reviewing each case, and in some cases, they are letting students go home for the holidays and finish their quarantine there.”
