Donald Trump has been scheduling tariffs on and off for the past month and a half on Canada and Mexico. These threats have caused a resurgence in Canada’s desire to buy more Canadian products. The threats have affected the global economy and stock markets, causing fear for everyone affected.
The issue of tariffs has been on most people’s radar. This is why the new episode of the almost 107-part podcast focuses on better understanding the trade war.
Ian Lee, an associate professor at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business, will discuss the impact of tariffs between the US and Canada in the podcast.
Here is a bit about what he will speak about in the full podcast.
“America is the modern Roman Empire, and we can say it’s not fair, we don’t like it. I don’t like it either, and no, it’s not fair. I agree. It is. It’s not fair. But that’s the reality,” said Lee about the United States’ power over other countries.
Lee argues that tariffs are destructive and hurt both consumers and businesses. He criticizes the Canadian government for imposing retaliatory tariffs on American goods, arguing that this is a tax increase on Canadians and will harm the Canadian economy.
Lee also believes that the Canadian government is using the tariffs as a distraction from more pressing economic issues, such as interprovincial trade barriers and supply management, just to name a few.
He argues that Canada needs to focus on becoming more financially competitive and diversifying its trade, rather than engaging in protectionist policies that ultimately harm Canadians.
