A Tuesday night car crash in front of Fanshawe College in London, Ontario sent one person to hospital.
Around 9 p.m. on Tuesday a car crashed through a fence directly in front of a popular bus stop that thousands of students rely on daily.
“(I heard) a powerful exhaust, and then I just heard the brakes screech, and then a loud bang. That must have been the crash,” says Ben Ajida who lives in an apartment building across the street from the college.
Ajida was at home at the time of the accident and heard the commotion through his window.
“I didn’t think much of it, I kind of ignored it. I came downstairs and I saw some buses parked at a different location,” he says after he realized the devastation in front of the school.
London Police say when they responded to a 911 call, they found the driver of the car at the scene. Police say the driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later released.
Despite how busy the bus stop can be, police confirmed that no pedestrians sustained any injuries that required medical attention.
According to a person on social media, they say “I was there, a car drove past the light at the intersection (Oxford St. and First St.) making a left and tried to beat the yellow light. The speed was too much making the driver drift and wasn’t able to control the car and ended up hitting the fence.”
The car crashed through the fence on Oxford Street, knocked down a pole and ripped the concrete out of the ground, narrowly missing one of the many bus shelters in front of the college.
A garbage can could be seen knocked over while bricks and debris were scattered across the bus lane.
As of Wednesday afternoon, part of the area remains closed with caution tape. London Police would not comment on the ongoing investigation, including whether charges would be laid.
