Simple Reflections for Artists, a local non-profit dedicated to showcasing creative talent through museums, events and exhibitions, is making waves in the city’s cultural scene. Founded by Dario Novoa, a visual and performing artist from El Salvador, the collective offers emerging local artists a platform to overcome barriers and share their work with a diverse audience.
The initiative underscores London’s growing reputation as a vibrant hub for music, art and tradition—a reputation that was further enhanced when the city was designated Canada’s first UNESCO City of Music.

On Feb. 15, 2015, Museum London hosted the Art and Culture Showcase, organized by the collective, an event that fused live painting, sculpting, flamenco dancing and performances combining diverse musical styles. The event not only highlighted the talents of local artists but also celebrated the city’s commitment to preserving and innovating cultural traditions.
The latest Almost 107-episode spotlights four artists from Simple Reflections for Artists, who share what art means to them. Diego Tamayo, a longtime member explained his journey in the creative field. “I studied graphic design and video cinematography at university and began painting and doing photography some 20 to 25 years ago,” Tamayo said. “About 10 years ago, while I was in the States working as vice president of the creative department at Telemundo and Univision, I left that role to follow my passion for photography and painting. My two cats, which I adopted when I arrived here, also inspire me—their energy is healing. We need passion and training; talent alone is not enough. Follow your heart and take the first step. Life is short.”

Melany Castro, a London native with Mexican heritage, expressed her enthusiasm for the community’s cultural growth. “I feel our community is expanding, and it is rare in a small city like London to see such diverse performances,” Castro said. “Art is a powerful form of expression that lets you share your background with the world. I grew up with art, inspired by my father, Edgar Castro, and I encourage emerging artists to come forward and show their work because opportunities like these are vital.”

Veteran guitarist Dave Pearson recalled his early musical experiences. “I bought my first six-string guitar for less than a dollar, but it was nearly unplayable,” Pearson said. “Switching to nylon-string guitars helped, and eventually, my parents got me a proper instrument. Today, I play a harp guitar that produces a rich resonance similar to a sitar. I encourage new talent to get online, join local open mics and gallery events, and introduce themselves. There are plenty of opportunities out there.”

Visual artist Harley Salamanca described his multidisciplinary approach. “I work across various media, blending geometric painting styles with surreal landscapes to offer fresh perspectives,” Salamanca said. “Art is not just about fame or money—it is about self-expression and releasing stress. My advice to emerging artists is simple: follow your passion, be consistent, and remain true to your creative vision.” Salamanca, who works for a bank, recalled that as a child he had little interest in art—often skipping classes to play soccer. Today, art stands as one of his greatest passions.
Simple Reflections for Artists continues to provide a platform for the city’s cultural expressions, reinforcing London’s status as a center for diverse music, art and traditions. With each event and every artist’s story, the collective reminds residents that creativity knows no boundaries.
