Flooding and dangerous roadways are likely in the forecast as the London area is under a special weather statement with significant rainfall expected Tuesday night through Wednesday evening.
“We’re expecting around 15 to 25mm of rainfall,” says Barbara Lapido of Environment Canada. “This is the first day that we are going to have that combination of rain and high temperatures after the snowfall this February.”
A high of 13 degrees is in the forecast for Wednesday afternoon which will lead to the first Spring melt of the year.
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) has issued a flood alert as they estimate the snowpack contains the equivalent of 75-110mm of water.
The alert also reminds parents to keep children and pets away from rivers, streams, ponds, and ditches.
In the past, common flood areas around the city have included Harris Park, Western University, and along Adelaide Street near Windermere.
Environment Canada expects heavy rainfall to begin in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with the chance of some thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon which are uncommon for this time of year.
