A home on Steele Street in London, was severely damaged after an explosion and fire on Saturday night. The fire started in the garage and quickly spread to the second floor before firefighters arrived. The damage is estimated to be over $200,000.
Emergency crews responded within minutes. Neighbors say eight fire trucks and four police cars arrived shortly after the explosion. Firefighters worked for about 30 minutes to control the flames.
Sarah, a neighbor who saw the explosion, described the frightening moment.
“The car in the garage exploded, and then the fire spread upstairs,” she said. “I think five boys lived there, but I’m not 100% sure.”
Another neighbor, Jack, said the fire department responded quickly.
“The fire trucks were here in three minutes,” he said. “It took about 30 minutes to put out the fire.”
Glen, who also saw the fire, said many people came outside as the flames spread.
“Everyone was outside, watching. The fire department told people to leave their homes for safety,” he said.
Neighbors say the house was rented by Western University students. All the residents were able to escape safely. They are believed to be staying in a hotel for now.
Fire officials are still investigating what caused the explosion. No other homes were damaged, but the community was left shocked by the incident.
