International students in Canada now have more opportunities to work while studying. Starting November 15, students with study permits can work up to 24 hours a week off-campus during school terms, up from the previous limit of 20 hours.
The change was confirmed by Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller. While the update was first announced in April 2024, the exact start date was only revealed recently.
Miller said the new rule will help students earn more money while staying focused on their studies. “This change will give students more flexibility to manage their time and gain practical experience,” he said.
The rule only applies to off-campus work while classes are in session. Students can still work unlimited hours on-campus or during school breaks.
This change is designed to help international students manage living expenses and gain job experience while keeping their education as a priority.
