Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a joyful time that celebrates the victory of good over evil. This year, the Indian community in London is celebrated the Day focusing on eco-friendly practices.
At the London Sikh Society, a major Diwali gathering place, fireworks were banned to keep celebrations safer and more sustainable. Many people chose to light oil lamps, design colourful rangolis, share sweets, and spend time with family and friends instead.
While fireworks are a traditional part of Diwali, not everyone felt they’re necessary. One of the participant shared, “Using fireworks late at night can disturb neighbors, especially those with kids. Responsible use of fireworks shows respect for the community.”
This year, many chose to celebrate Diwali without fireworks, respecting both the environment and community peace.
However, for some people like Navjot, balancing Diwali with daily responsibilities was challenging. As he explained, “I had big plans, but I have work and deadlines. I’ll try to visit the temple to connect with my culture.”
Even with busy schedules, people found ways to honor the Day in meaningful ways.
