The Ontario government has recently proposed legislation that would allow them to have the final say on the addition of bike lanes in cities all across the province.
This proposal is aimed at reducing gridlock and easing the flow of traffic in cities.
A media release from October 15 detailing the legislation, said the municipal governments will have to receive approval from the Ontario government before a bike lane that could affect traffic is installed.
The proposal will be determined on October 21.
Julie Ryan, a board member of London Cycle Link says this legislation is going in the wrong direction and that more protected bike lanes will reduce gridlock.
“Drivers are gridlock,” she says “When we can move people out of cars and into other modes of transportation….it’s better for everybody.”
“Protected bike lanes make me feel safer and I think they do for other people as well,” she says when asked about the potential reduction in protected bike lanes.
Julie has been cycling since she was a child and uses it as her main mode of transportation to this day.
She thinks that legislation like this will deter more people from using bicycles as a means of transportation and using them in general.
