The West Region detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has begun the Drive Smart – Keep it Safe campaign today, which will run until September, 29.
“This campaign is more about educating people on the dangers, but we will also be enforcing,” says West Region OPP Sergeant, Ed Sanchuk. “Driving is a privilege, not a right.”
The campaign is aimed at tackling stunt driving and illegally modified vehicles, according to a media release from the West Region OPP.
Driving 40 km/h over a speed limit under 80 km/h is considered stunt driving. The fine is up to $10 thousand, points can be taken off your license, and your vehicle can be impounded.
“As community members, we must encourage one another to drive responsibly and follow the law. If you see dangerous driving or suspect illegal vehicle modifications, report it,” says West Region Traffic and Marine Program Manager, Mike McConnell. “Your vigilance can save lives. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.”
During this campaign, Londoners can expect to see a higher police presence, says Sanchuk.
