A TikTok video by user Shay.nannigans87 has picked up speed after she suggests normalizing paying for play dates.
In the video, she shows a text exchange between her and another parent where she asks for $15 for hosting their child for a playdate. She broke down the list of items which included $1 for wear and tear on the couch and $3 for the three trips to the bathroom.
“When I had play dates, it was an honor for other kids to come over and keep my kids busy. So, you know, I would provide the snacks, I would provide all the supplies for the play dates,” says Sophia Konidis, a London mom of three.
The video has gained popularity on multiple social media apps including Instagram and X with many people commenting on the video saying this is ridiculous. The video has over 30 thousand comments and 3.5 millions views.
“It’s like inviting someone over for dinner and then charging them for the meal and the couch they sat on. That’s embarrassing,” says Konidis.
After watching of few of Shay.nannigans87 videos it’s clear the video is not serious and she explains that she is “rage-baiting”, which is her way of getting views.
A similar post was made back in April by TikTok user Bri Welmar where she charged a mom $36 for a playdate. In the video, she explains that she counted the amount of soap the child used and even charged a $10 cleanup fee.
@shay.nanigans87 Contraversial but I think it’s a really good idea. What do you think?
