WestJet has announced the end of their strike that lasted through the long weekend.
The strike resulted in over a thousand flights being cancelled and over 10-thousand passengers being affected.
WestJet was forced to park 130 of their 180 aircrafts at 13 different airports according to a news release from WestJet.
“The damage to Canadians and our airline is massive, a swift resolution was necessary,” says President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer, Diederik Pen in the news release. “We take no victory laps on this outcome but will sleep better tonight knowing further harm has been prevented.”
WestJet is working to restore their full operations however London International airport is still seeing cancellations with a WestJet flight cancelled from Calgary today at 6:59pm.
CEO of London International Airport Scott McFadzean says roughly 650 passengers were affected daily in London.
“We did the best we could to accommodate them and help them find either alternative travel arrangements or accommodations to stay a few more days in the city while they waited for their flights to get sorted out,” says McFadzean.
McFadzean goes on to say that the strike caught the airlines and airports across the country by surprise.
“The full resumption of operations will take time and further cancellations will be required over the coming days”, says the news release from WestJet.
The news release credits lack of clarity from the government as well as decisions made by the CIRB for the strike.
“We want to thank guests for their patience during what was an uncertain and stressful time,” says Pen in the news release.
