With the warm weather arriving in London, the dreaded summer construction season is upon us. Londoners will see more construction projects start around the city by the end of the month.
The City of London says it will spend a record-breaking $ 270-million on construction projects this year.
Here are some of the upcoming projects in London:
Clarence Street and York Street – Begins May 23rd until December 2024
Starting on Thursday, May 23rd, Clarence Street will be closed at York Street with no access to and from York. There will be lane reductions in place until the road is fully closed in late July. Access to the Citi Plaza parking garage will only be able from Clarence Street because the entrance from York Street will be closed.
York Street and Wellington Street – Begins at the end of May until fall 2025
One of the popular intersections in downtown London will see work begin on York Street on the west side of Wellington Street by the end of the month. This project will improve outdated infrastructure and will replace sidewalks, repair the sidewalks underneath the overpass, remove trees, and pave new asphalt.
Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street – Begins summer 2024 until fall 2024
Work is expected to start sometime in June. The project will widen Sunningdale Road from two lanes to four lanes through the intersection and add new turning lanes. Bike paths will be added, and sidewalks will be improved.
Windermere Road – Begins summer 2024 until spring 2025
On the west side of Western Road between Ryersie Road and Colip Circle, work will begin to improve the asphalt and install a new sidewalk.
Oxford Street West and Gideon Drive Roundabout – begins summer 2024 until fall 2024
The city of London is planning to build a new roundabout, bike lanes, crosswalks, and improve street lighting in the area. Roundabouts are starting to become more common in London over the past number of years.
Here are some of the ongoing projects in London:
Fanshawe Park Road and Richmond Street – Expected to last until fall 2024
Work is still underway at one of the busiest intersections in the north end of London. Phase 2 of the project began back in March and is expected to last until sometime in the fall season of this year. One of the biggest improvements being added during this project are dual left turn lanes from Richmond Street onto Fanshawe Park Road.
Highbury Ave and Oxford Street East– Expected to last until summer 2025
Another main artery in London is the intersection at Highbury and Oxford which has been slowing traffic since February. This project is a part of the “East London Link” and will establish transit lanes and stations.
Adelaide Street Underpass – Expected to last until summer 2025
Last but certainly not least is the coveted underpass being built on Adelaide Street. Two lanes of traffic are now open. However, McMahon Street and Central Avenue will remain closed until the fall.
The City of London advises transit riders to visit the LTC website for the most up to date information on any service disruptions or detours caused by the construction.
