Thousands of motorcyclists are injured in collisions every year, with the collision rate increasing annually. May is motorcycle safety awareness month. With warm weather now forecasted, motorcyclists are expected to take to the roads.
“We remind motorists to always look twice for motorcycles. Due to their smaller size, motorcycles can be easily hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot,” says a tweet posted by London Police Services ON, “together, we can reduce accidents and save lives, making the roads safer for everyone.”
There have already been fatal motorcycle collisions in 2024.
The Royal Mounted Police have posted that motorcyclists should incorporate the following for increased safety:
- Obey the speed limit
- Driver sober and well-rested
- Check, and double check, blind spots before changing lanes
- Ride within your ability and skill level, and ride with others
- Wear approved helmet
- Consider wearing high visibility and/or protective clothing
