The city of London is finding new ways to celebrate Black History Month. Troy Townsend a member of Fanshawe’s EDI (Equity Diversity and Inclusion) foundation says that other than 2023 Fanshawe has not had not had much support in previous years. Townsend mentions
“Other than last year, our inaugural year to have Black History Month events. Nothing has existed at Fanshawe in the past So with the Inception of this position the position I do is an anti-racism inclusion specialist.”
Townsend is also involved a great amount around London. She goes on to talk about what the city of London is doing differently this year then in years in the past, she says that
“in addition, we are putting out four calls to action that are going out on all four social media platforms. So each Monday of February, we’re doing a different call to action asking people just to be aware read more learn more engage with local black businesses more.”
Townsend added that her and the community are really excited as they will have celebrity chef Suzanne Barr who will be coming from Toronto. Barr works on the intersection of race food and culture. Townsend also mentioned that she’s Jamaican by heritage and that written about her mayaki tree. and she’s coming as their keynote guest speaker to accompany her. London’s black community have invited The culinary students from London’s downtown campus, and they will be providing some little treats and doing a little cooking demonstration. She also told XFM reporters that student’s and Londoners that
“the interrobang is also releasing a Black History Month edition specifically with contributions from student black community poetry articles and all kinds of things. I’ve written for. On February 15th, we’re asking everyone to mark your calendar because we’re bringing a big showcase event to the financial campus.”
Townsend goes on to mention the reactions that she has seen around the city of London. She says that
“well I’ve definitely seen the reactions change over the years because the face of London has changed over the year. So we’re trying to become more inclusive and certainly working towards that I think the city of London is aligned with Fanshawe’s goals for inclusivity and more diverse community.”
