Fanshawe’s new hair salon in Innovation Village has been open for a full week, and it has been busy. The co-owner of Dernier Cri Hair Group, Deborah Evans, wanted to make a footprint in the new space.
“At our salon, we really wanted to go with the whole vibe of Innovation Village here at the college, which is up to date, very high tech, and future-focused. SoI really wanted to bring that into the salon,” says Deborah Evans.
Evans wanted to make this hair salon trendy and stylish, and the name of the hair salon, Dernier Cri, has an origin story.
“The story behind it is my grandmother; she used to always say it when something was trendy or hip or cool or awesome. She’d say that’s very Dernier Cri, but it turns out it’s actually a saying from the early 1900s. I just thought that’s something pretty cool, something different,” says Evans.
Evans took the step and decided to be different from other hair salons.
“We’ve teamed up with a great organization called Green Circle, and they allow us to recycle so many things. We recycle hair, and we recycle foils. We make sure that the color that’s left over after coloring gets properly disposed of,” says Evans.
Dernier Hair Group is not just your average salon; it’s eco-friendly as well.
“Essentially, this salon has a zero-carbon footprint; nothing ends up in a landfill site. It’s great for sustainability efforts, as well as all the products we use for our sustainable packaging. They’re all vegan ingredients, and all of our products are cruelty-free,” says Evans.
DC Hair Group is not only environmentally friendly but has also created a space where people can feel like family. Alexandra Perek, the Manager of DC Hair Group, was a stay-at-home mom before working at the salon.
“I’m so appreciative that Deborah gave me that opportunity to work here. I was a stay-at-home mom for six years, and now I feel alive again. I’m so happy, and I feel like they are my second family. It’s so much fun to work here, and the people are amazing,” says Perek.
A Fanshawe student was excited that there is a hair salon on-campus. “It’s really interesting that there is a salon on campus for college students, and they can also market it to family and friends. I’m excited for it,” says a Fanshawe student. Remy Alvarez, who works at the student hub in Innovation Village, helps students with directions to classes, services, and what the college offers.
“One of the most common questions that we get asked about are the services within Innovation Village, like the study spaces, but also recently, I’ve been seeing a trend of students asking where the salon is, and it’s L1002 on the right side. The salon is just before Forwell Hall,” says Alvarez.
Dernier Cri Hair Group is not too far away from Innovation Hub’s Forwell Hall.
