Ontario is kickstarting the second week of the New Year with a messy snowfall blanketing the region, surprising residents following a mild holiday season.
Multiple regions including London were notified by Environment Canada posting a Special Weather Statement early Tuesday morning warning travelers of hazardous road conditions.
The initial snowfall, ranging between 5 to 30 centimeters transitioned into rain early afternoon, setting the stage for potential freezing rain later Tuesday night. Weather forecasts indicate a resurgence of snow on Wednesday, persisting to Thursday afternoon.
In response to the weather advisory, Ontario Provincial Police Media outlets including the OPP West region in London urged drivers to take precautionary measures. The reminder emphasized simple adjustments, “Simple changes like turning on your lights, leaving earlier, reducing speeds, and increasing following distances will improve the odds of arriving safely.” Fortunately, there have been no reported collisions in the city, on backroads, or the highways.
Adding to the cautionary measures, the Catfish Creek Conservation Authority in Aylmer issued a statement addressing water safety and watershed conditions. The advisor noted the possibility of higher-than-normal creek flows with unsafe banks due to the rainfall, urging residents to exercise caution in affected areas.
As Ontario navigates its first significant winter weather event of the year, Environment Canada and authorities are on high alert to ensure the safety of everyone.
