Exam season at Fanshawe has just about started. So with the fall term nearing its end, many students are feeling the pressure of final assignments and tests.
“Exams are pretty stressful. It’s a busy time with a lot of assignments, it gets pretty hectic.” says Olivia, a Fanshawe student who wants to perform well with the end of the term approaching. And she isn’t the only student that feels pressure.
20-year-old first year student Kyler De Jong says he wants to pass his classes for both his and his mom’s concern. “They’re stressing me out a bit. You know, I wanna make my mom proud. But I also wanna move onto the next semester, and my next stage of life into getting a career.”
Fanshawe is offering students that might feel overwhelmed with incoming assignments multiple support services that can help alleviate the pressure. One of the more robust options for Fanshawe students is their counselling and support services.
One of Fanshawe College’s guidance counsellors, Gillian Villanueva, says that they’re managing an influx of appointments due to exams.
“This is generally a really busy time of year. Often times what we find is the period right before exams can be really busy. Sometimes during exam times, sometimes students are so busy, with preparing for exams that they’re not able to come to their appointments. So we do know that exams are A1 priority, So yeah, it tends to be a more busy time in terms of traffic in the office.”
Ms. Villanueva also talks about how the counselling service will partner with Fanshawe’s student union for stress reliving events for students.
“We like to help out with things like chill lounges, put on by the FSU, and we of course contribute. We like to encourage students to take care of your mental health, so, we’ll be available to talk with students when they approach us who’ve got some concerns or questions, or just are feeling the stress from this time of year. We always encourage students to really, as much as studies, and doing well on their schoolwork is a priority, to really focus on taking care of their mental health. Making sure that they’re eating sufficiently, that they’re getting proper rest.”
Fanshawe’s counselling services are located at F building in room 2010 for students that feel like it could help them. The service is open from Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. as well as Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
