The ride sharing service, Lyft, has officially launched in London today as apart of their expansion into other cities across Canada. Lyft is a platform that offers drivers with their own cars to pick and drop off customers, alike companies with similar services such as Uber and Didi.
They have focused their efforts in bolstering their driver numbers by with offering on-demand rides across town or for visitors to get to and from the London international airport. A spokesperson from Lyft reached out XFM saying, “its flexible way for drivers to earn good money while helping their riders to easily connect with friends, co-workers, or get to the airport to see far-away family.”
Fanshawe students, who utilize many of these services, are surprised by the launch of the platform as they were not aware, like Erin Alpaugh.
“I was not aware that they launched, I probably try it out and then see what the experience is like and then go from there if it’s better”.
Max Brunner, a music industry arts student, says that this offers better competition for the market in the city. “I’m not sure what the price difference is, but I would just say like finding which one is cheaper as I’m down for more; It’s less than a monopoly” said Brunner.
Alpaugh is hopeful the company will target students by offering them deals on rides.
“like a student deal. I know a lot of people do like use Ubers like honestly not as much like cabs or anything like that but maybe offerings student deal or yeah something like that would probably taste students.” said Alpaugh.
Lyft says Londoners have the option to chose between a standard or a XL ride at the current time. They currently service other major cities across Canada, such as Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver.
