The London Police services were in attendance for Western’s homecoming weekend. Constable Matthew Dawson has stated in an email:
“To ensure we are able to respond to anticipated crowds, while continuing to respond to calls for service throughout the city, officers from Hamilton, York, and Windsor police services will be in attendance and will work alongside our London Police Service members.”
In Broughdale, where the majority festivities took place, there were more police within the area compared to last year’s homecoming event. One of the partygoers said “I feel safe,” while another participant said, “they’re kind of killing the vibe.” Some officers were patrolling the area while some were taking a laid-back approach.
“They’re beauties, they’re just chillen and taking pictures with us, they’re having a good time….,” stated an attendee
They continue to say,
“…I feel like they’re really respectful, like they’re understanding that we’re just trying to have a good time. They don’t want to ruin it but you gotta be responsible, can’t drink in front of them.”
The partygoers were happy to feel safe about having more protection but some feel otherwise.
“Kids need to party but the thing is the police are here. We’re paying $80 an hour or whatever. Right over there, there’s over $700 in a huddle and over down here there’s another Circle. Why do we have them?” Said an anonymous property owner.
The property manager wanted to see the police take a more active approach around his businesses instead of being laid-back. They continue to say,
“Once in a while, they’ll give a ticket out. The kids can party but protect the properties because this street, Broughdale, we’re probably close to a million dollars with the property tax.”
At night, it was a completely different turn out for the homecoming event. The police presence was high and they shut down all the necessary, party-centric areas.
Most of the partygoers that attended during this time, had to find a new party elsewhere or to celebrate at a nightclub as the police were shutting down more parties within the area to ensure everyone’s safety.
