Wellington Street is getting a massive upgrade as part of the new rapid transit plan in London. The “Wellington Gateway” will connect the busy street to the rest of the rapid transit system offering Londoners on the busy street access to faster public transportation.
The graph as seen on the left shows each of the two phases and the affected areas along Wellington. Stage 1 is to begin this spring and is expected to be completed in 2026, the last of the 3 major rapid transit projects in London.
Ted Koza, The Division Manager and Major Project for the City Of London says “The Gateway will connect Londoners south of the Thames to the rest of the system offering travel for students down from Fanshawe to White Oaks and vise versa”
1st year Fanshawe student Tracy Harding was upbeat about the news. “Living down by the Thames its hard to rely on current bus times so having this outlet for not just students but everyone down here is going to be nice.”
The 1st stage of the project will see Wellington north of the Thames River under construction with reduced lanes to Wellington north of Horton Street.
Stage 2 sees the route extended to north of Dundas Street. Part 2 of Stages 1 and 2 will see the southbound lanes get work done with northbound restrictions which will feed into the Downtown Loop Project.
No further transit plans have been discussed by council after the completion of the Wellington Gateway.
